Our Community

In Their Own Words

An Inspirational Education with Rigour, Values and Care

The Senior School at Baobab College combines a vibrant learning environment, traditional values, and nurturing pastoral care, to underpin our delivery of an inspirational education.

Our classrooms boast cutting edge technology and teachers use the latest methodologies in presenting the curriculum. Lessons are active, engaging and encourage critical thinking amongst the students. Our frequent cross curricular days enable students to see the links between their subjects and the world at large.

Our house leaders and peer mentoring system ensure we maintain a focus on pastoral care, to ensure students are safe and secure and to maximise their potential both in and outside the classroom. We pride ourselves on bringing out the best in every student for their future success and happiness.

Years 9 to 11

A New Stage of Independence

Senior School begins in Year 9 and takes students through their IGCSE studies before progression to Senior College in Years 12 and 13.

Specialist teachers combine active lessons, classroom technology and cross-curricular learning. House leaders and peer mentors provide pastoral support as students take greater responsibility for their learning.

The IGCSE Programme

Cambridge & Edexcel Examination Pathway

Students follow the IGCSE curriculum, leading to examinations assessed by Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel. Additional subjects are introduced here including Accounting, Business Studies, Literature in English, Travel and Tourism, as well as the three separate science subjects.

Students will typically take nine subjects at this stage, in which English, Maths, French and Literature are compulsory.

The programme is designed to balance rigour, breadth and clear preparation for the next academic stage.

Senior College — AS & A Level

Specialist Study for University Preparation

The final stage of Senior School is Senior College, where students will take three (or in exceptional circumstances four) subjects, as they work towards AS and A Level examinations. Psychology and Economics are added to the curriculum at this stage.

All students are encouraged to study three A Level subjects, while more able students may be supported in following four courses. We offer a broad curriculum of AS and A Levels taught by specialist staff, including Art and Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Design and Technology, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Geography, History, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology and Physical Education.

The entry requirements for Year 12 AS are 5 A*–C in IGCSE including English and Maths, with B grades in the intended subjects for A Level. Students following other exam systems with similar attainment may also be accepted.

In Year 12, students will commonly study three or four subjects for AS Level. In Year 13, students usually do just three subjects to A Level. Each subject has five teaching periods a week, and students are expected to complete one hour of personal study per lesson. Small class sizes encourage close and supportive working relationships between staff and students.

University & Careers Guidance

Preparing Students for Life After School

We want all our students to maximise their potential and leave school having had the opportunity to find out about the universities and career paths open to them.

All students have two tutorial sessions per week. One session focuses on careers and includes presentations from a wide range of universities from around the world and visiting speakers from different fields of work. The second tutorial session covers a personal, social, health and citizenship programme, including leadership, independent living, coping with exam pressure and time management.

All Senior College students are registered with BridgeU for guidance on appropriate courses to fit their requirements and abilities at universities worldwide. Baobab College is also registered for UK university applications through UCAS.

Each student receives individual support from a dedicated tutor for personal statements, applications and references.

Senior School at Baobab is designed to help students think critically, grow confidently, and move forward with purpose into university and beyond.
